Most US retail outlets sell different width shoes based on the cirucmference of the foot around the widest part of the foot. When using a tape measure the diagram to the right gives shows where you should be measuring. Many people will have one foot that is slightly wider than the other so ensure that you measure both feet and take the width fitting for the larger foot.

For each half size increase in shoe size the foot circumference for a specific width fitting increases by one eighth of an inch. There is a quarter of an inch difference in foot circumference for each width fitting.
